Comparing the Health Effects of Smokeless Tobacco, Cigarette Smoking, and New Tobacco Products Advertised as Safer Alternatives (Alternative Tobacco Study)
What is the purpose of the study?

The study examines how alternative tobacco products affect your health compared to nicotine replacement products and how these products may help you quit smoking.
How often are the clinic visits?

The study is 19 weeks long. Clinic visits are once a week for nine weeks, with a final follow-up visit ten weeks later.
What will I be doing in the study?

For the first two weeks of the study, you will be asked to continue smoking your own brand of cigarette. After this two week baseline period, you will be randomly assigned to either use a nicotine replacement product OR use a new oral tobacco product that may help you quit smoking. The first week of using the product you will be able to use it as a substitution for some cigarettes to get used to the product. After this one week sampling period, you will quit smoking and use only your assigned study product for four weeks. You will then have one week to taper off the product, after which you will be required to be abstinent of any form of tobacco or nicotine product. There will be follow up visits at one week and 12 weeks after the study ends.
Will I be compensated?

You will receive up to $250 for your time spent participating if you comply with all of the study requirements.
