Determining and Comparing the Pharmacokinetics of Deuterated Phenanthrene in Smokers After Oral Dosing and Incorporation into Cigarettes
What is the purpose of the study?

The purpose of this research study is to determine if people break down a chemical in cigarette smoke called phenanthrene differently when it is smoked or taken in a liquid form. Phenanthrene is a chemical found in the environment as well as in cigarette smoke.
How often are the clinic visits?

One visit for a physical, two all day sessions on the in-patient research unit followed by a clinic visit 12 and 36 hours after discharge from the unit.
What will I be doing in the study?

You will attend two all day sessions on the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) about 2 weeks apart. You will not be able to smoke for a 36 hour period during these sessions. At one of these sessions you will be given a small amount of liquid (about an ounce) to drink which contains deuterated phenanthrene. At the other session, you will smoke a cigarette that contains an equal amount of deuterated phenanthrene. During the GCRC session we will take your blood 12 times through a catheter (like an IV) placed in your arm. You will collect all of your urine while at the GCRC and for the following day after discharge and return it to the clinic.
Will I be compensated?

You will receive up to $500 for your time spent participating if you comply with all of the study requirements.
