Relaxation
or Exercise for Smoking Treatment
REST
Study
What is the purpose of the study?
This study is being done to investigate the effectiveness
of exercise and relaxation techniques in helping postmenopausal women quit
smoking.
How often are the clinic visits?
You
will attend weekly to biweekly sessions for 6 months. There will also be
three follow-up clinic visits at 9, 12 and 15 months after your quit date.
Sessions will last approximately 1.5 hours.
What will I be doing in the study?
First, you
will attend an orientation visit where you will learn more about the study, meet the study staff and ask any questions you
might have. After the orientation visit, you will attend a screening visit.
At this visit, you will have a brief physical exam, including a blood draw
and an EKG. Once you are accepted into the study you will then complete a
baseline visit. At this visit, you will fill out several forms and
questionnaires, complete fitness tests and have your bone mineral density
measured with a DEXA scan.
You will be randomly assigned
(like the flip of a coin) to either participate in either the exercise or
relaxation group. You will participate in weekly to biweekly group meetings
to learn how to use exercise or relaxation techniques to minimize cravings
for cigarettes. You will also track how you are using exercise or relaxation
techniques by completing automated phone calls. Throughout the study, you
fill out several forms, complete additional fitness tests and have a second
DEXA scan.
Will I be compensated?
If you come in for all the visits, do
all the procedures and fill out all of the forms, you will be paid up to $468
for your participation. You will also receive Chantix,
a brief physical exam, measurement of your bone mineral density, and a
structured program to help you quit smoking using exercise or relaxation
techniques at no cost to you.
What should I do if I am interested?
Let us know.
